Asana and pranayama are not the beginning of Yoga. But awareness in every action combining body, mind and spirit is.

About SYC Nottingham

Swami Niranjan gave his blessings to this new centre in May 2004. The wish for this new centre is to bring together people from the wider areas of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Leicestershire and more northern counties who wish to deepen their experience of Satyananda Yoga. For those of you who have not been to the centre, it is situated in my small terraced house in Arnold and because the size limits teaching, most classes are held in other venues. There are, though, regular short courses held at the centre and the cleansing practices are taught twice yearly. We have a selection of Satyananda books and tapes/CDs for sale. Anyone who wishes to help and offer any karma yoga (help with the centre) will be very welcome. Please contact Amarajyoti

Satyananda Yoga

The meaning of Yoga is Unity. Through the practices of Yoga we try and bring about a unity, a harmony, in the body, mind, emotions and inner self (spirit). Yoga practices help to bring balance and harmony to all aspects of the human individual.

Yoga is different from other forms of physical exercise as we try to practice with awareness. By bringing the mind into harmony with the body and breath, to the here and now, we allow ourselves to be present in each moment.

This system of yoga comes directly from India and the teachings of Swami Satyananda Saraswati, who founded the Bihar School of Yoga. Swami Satyananda is a highly recognised teacher and Yogic master. Swami Satyananda was a disciple of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh. The work continues with Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati who is the disciple of Swami Satyananda.

This system that Swami Satyananda devised is a systematic, integrated system working with the mind, breath and body and the whole being. (All students start with the same basic practices, which are developed over time). It is not a body culture.

Emphasis is placed on the shatkarmas (cleansing practices) as a basis of hatha yoga. The system also includes Mantra, Swara and Karma Yoga. This system accepts that every life experience is part of our spiritual learning, as long as it is practised consciously.

It is useful to wear loose, comfortable clothing and try not to have eaten (especially a large meal) for at least 2 hours before practicing yoga.

At home, try and find a few minutes every day to practice. Start with a few simple practices and build up over a period of time. This regular practice is when the benefits of Yoga are really felt.
